What are Dental Crowns?
A crown is a restoration that is typically used to cover a tooth that’s been damaged or compromised. Crowns are made of tooth-colored materials that are durable and long-lasting. In fact, most patients have crowns that can last years or even decades. Your crown both restores a tooth to its original size and shape while offering restorative and cosmetic benefits.
Why would Dental Crowns be needed?
You might have chipped, broken or cracked one of your teeth. Your tooth might have recently been root canaled. If you have a tooth that has a large amount of decay in it or too much filling material, we might suggest having it crowned. Crowns can be placed on just about any damaged tooth within the mouth.
Who is a candidate for Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is ideal for most otherwise healthy adult patients. We can examine your teeth to determine if a crown is needed. If you have an older crown, we can replace it as it begins to show signs of wear. Your crown can last you for a long time and provide you with a full, healthy-looking smile.
What can be expected during the Dental Crown procedure?
The procedure will begin with a localized anesthetic that is administered into the area where the crown will be placed. We file the tooth down to make room for the new crown. Impressions are taken and used to create the brand new crown that will be placed over the tooth. You’ll then come back in for a second visit to have the actual crown placed. We will file and adjust the crown so that it fits properly. You’ll then be able to leave the office feeling confident in your smile and able to brush and floss around the crown as you would your natural teeth.
