What is Teeth Whitening?
Whitening is a great way to improve your smile and increase your confidence. Over time and because of many different lifestyle factors, your teeth can become dull and yellow. We offer two main types of whitening for our patients. In-office whitening can be done in just under an hour, while our take-home professional whitening kits allow you to whiten on your time.
Why would Teeth Whitening be needed?
Many different factors contribute to a stained, discolored smile. Smoking, drinking coffee and tea, drinking cola and even taking certain medications can all contribute to an otherwise unsightly smile. Just the act of getting older can have an effect on the color of your teeth. Many people choose to whiten their teeth before a big event, like a wedding or reunion.
Who is a candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Most patients who want to whiten their teeth can successfully have the work done in our office. It is important to note that whitening will not have an impact on restorations in your mouth. Restorations like veneers, crowns, bridges and bonding will not lighten any more than when they were first placed. Whitening is best for otherwise healthy adult patients who are free of tooth decay and other dental problems.
What happens during the Teeth Whitening process?
For in-office whitening, we will apply a whitening gel to your teeth. Your lips are kept separated from the teeth and we work to reduce saliva flow to prevent the gel from becoming diluted. We then place an acceleration light over the teeth to improve results. In just under an hour, your teeth are multiple shades whiter and brighter. Our take-home whitening involves making custom-fit trays for your mouth. We do this by taking impressions and then using these molds to make the actual trays. We will provide you with a whitening gel that is used inside of these trays and instructions on how to use them.
