What are the Different Types of Dental Braces?

Dental braces offer many orthodontic & aesthetic benefits and continue to benefit the lives of many people year after year.  However, many patients will often ask us what the differences are between each of the different types of dental braces. In this article, Dr. Shai Patel will explores what distinguishes braces from each other and what the more popular different types are.

What Makes Braces Different From Each Other?

The main distinguishing factors which typically separate the  different braces lie mainly in the material that they use as well as the technique used for their preparation. This is due to the fact that many braces still operate and act the same for their overall function in straightening your smile and correcting other oral issues.

So, while braces differ, they each basically fulfill the same function, though some may be more comfortable or aesthetic than others!

What Different Braces Exist?

The main types of dental braces that people can get can typically be broken down into the following: Metallic Braces, Sapphire & Ceramic Braces, and Lingual Braces.

Metallic Braces

“Metal Braces” are the most resistant and offer greater durability in clear advantage over the rest of the braces. They resist much better than the ceramics the force exerted during chewing. They fall less and transmit the forces better to the teeth, so dental treatment will go faster. The drawback is that they are less aesthetic.

Sapphire & Ceramic Braces

These are the most aesthetic braces, although these dental devices can extend about four to five months of treatment. They hide more, to the extent that it does not seem that we have braces on our teeth. They are not stained with food and their transparency favors the aesthetics of the smile. In the same way, ceramic braces are not stained with food and are visibly very appropriate. The Dentists comment that both the metal and sapphire braces and the transparent ones have a similar durability, only slightly higher in the case of the former.

Lingual Braces

This type of braces can also be applied in a dental clinic and the option is to put the braces on the inner side of the teeth, which is known as lingual orthodontics, lingual braces or internal braces. They are the only 100% invisible braces. For this reason, they are never in sight – only the patient will know that he has them on.

In this case they are designed in a laboratory, carrying out a special study on the case, since it is a type of orthodontics that employs high technology and has a maximum degree of efficiency because it is fully customized. Its size is smaller than any other and all these characteristics make the treatment very effective. In most cases they are the most expensive.
